Some stern last-day resistance from Tim Ambrose and Henry Brookes failed to save Warwickshire from slipping to defeat against Kent in their opening County Championship clash of the season.

The Bears had resumed the final morning on 79-4, still needing another 79 to avoid an innings defeat and were then reduced to 121-7.

Ambrose and Brookes then offered hope that the hosts, who went into the clash without the injured Olly Stone, Chris Woakes, Ian Bell, Liam Norwell and Aaron Thomason, could escape with a draw as they compiled a superb century stand.

But they were separated just before tea when Amrose fell for 107 with the total on 265. Brookes went on to make a career-best 84 as the Bears were eventually bowled out for 280.

Kent then eased to 124-2 to complete their first victory in Division One of the championship since 2010.

First-innings century-maker Zak Crawley (45) and Matt Renshaw (48 not out) made light work of the small target.
