Tammy Abraham happy to be put on the spot

Penalty hero Tammy Abraham claims he didn’t think twice about stepping up to the spot after setting Villa on course to victory over Bristol City.

The 21-year-old bagged his 24th goal of the season when he stroked home a 55th-minute penalty to open the scoring at Villa Park on Saturday.

It came just three days after Abraham had missed from the spot early in Villa’s 2-1 win at Rotherham.

But the Chelsea loanee, who has now scored five out of six penalties this term, insists his confidence was never affected.

Abraham said: “I always watch top strikers and if top strikers miss penalties, they go again.

“I want to get to that level and if I miss, I just keep going. That is what I did on Saturday.

“I just want to keep going and score as many as possible, get those wins. I came here to score goals and take this team as far as possible.

“We can’t get complacent now. We have to go into every game like it is our last and put in performances.”

After Abraham had broken the deadlock, Conor Hourihane got what proved to be the winner for Villa in the 66th minute, with Famara Diedhiou’s 74th-minute strike for the visitors proving a mere consolation.

Victory cemented fifth place in the table for Dean Smith’s team, while also equalling their best winning run since 1975.

Abraham, who was substituted in the closing stages after feeling tightness in his hamstring, said: “That is unbelievable. I am almost lost for words. Coming off the last 20 minutes I was shaking on the bench watching the game.

“We have a brilliant team and we dug deep. That is what we keep doing. To win eight games is a massive achievement.

“We knew it would not be an easy game. We were on the front foot and had a lot of chances. It could have been 5-0 in the first-half.

“These games are as tough as they come. But when we got our chances we took them. I had to score my penalty after missing the last one.

“Conor had a few chances and luckily got one. It is all about being in the right place. We kept going.”
