Wolves linked to big-money Portuguese stars Joao Cancelo and Gonçalo Guedes

Wolves have been linked with big money moves for Portuguese stars Joao Cancelo and Gonçalo Guedes – with Benik Afobe set to leave for Stoke City just days after his £10million return to Molineux.

Reports from Italy and Spain claimed Wolves offered Valencia £35 million for right-back Cancelo, 24, while the club have shown interest in Paris Saint Germain winger Guedes, 21. However, the Express & Star understands nothing is imminent on Cancelo and Guedes, as Wolves are currently looking to build their squad ahead of their Premier League return.

Wolves are also interested in goalkeeper Rui Patricio, 30, who is Portugal’s number one shot-stopper.

But Afobe, 25, looks set to be heading out the door in a £12m move to Stoke City - just days after signing permanently last Friday, following his loan spell last season.

Nuno Espirito Santo will be hoping to strengthen his side for next season in a bid to compete with England’s best teams.

But former Wolves skipper Ally Robertson has no doubts they will survive in the Premier League.

And he feels they are already a strong force with their current crop of players.

Nuno’s team are only eighth favourites to be relegated in their first campaign back in the big time for six years.

Indeed, the bookies fancy Wolves to finish in the top half given the club’s spending power. And Robertson agrees that they’ll have no problem staying up.

“Yes, they have proven that they have got a good side, they have got a good attacking side,” he said. “It is a big difference from the Championship to the Premier League.

“But the players and everything they have got, I am sure they will do well.”

Robertson skippered Wolves in the Sherpa Van final. A special dinner at Molineux is taking place to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the win.
