Shaggy dog story for Charlie as RSPCA issue grooming warning

The 10-year-old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel was taken to a groomer by the RSPCA after his owner became embarrassed by his pet's appearance.

The owner has now given permission for the RSPCA, who got involved after concerns were raised for the animal's welfare, to release the images, but does not want to be named.

RSPCA inspector Joe Burgess said: "I was shocked when I saw how matted Charlie had become. The dog's owner - who absolutely dotes on him - was unable to take him to a groomer, and he had also gotten obese.

"Basically, his hair got to the point that the owner was embarrassed to walk him, so he stayed indoors more. As a result of not going for walks his claws grew really long to the point where he was not able to walk very well without them being clipped.

"As he wasn't getting the exercise anymore and his diet stayed the same, he was putting on weight. He is a much-loved dog and his owner is working with us on getting him back to health.

"Strict instruction has been given in terms of diet and exercise and he's already booked in for another haircut in a few weeks time.

"It's so important that owners recognise that grooming is an essential part of dog care. All breeds require daily grooming - how much depends on the breed, age, or health of the pet. Regular grooming helps to ensure a dog is healthy and comfortable."
