May must make way for new leader

I think that Theresa May should hand in her resignation as Prime Minister with immediate effect.

Theresa May

In the last few months, she has proven herself as a failure as Prime Minister who will do or say anything to save her own skin, whatever the cost might be to the taxpayer and whatever better causes that money could and should have been spent on.

Her election campaign was a disgrace, which began with sending one of her cabinet ministers to take part in a TV debate against other party leaders. She clearly took it for granted that her government would comfortably retain a number of seats which ended up being surprise gains for Labour, although at the same time she curiously managed to seize several seats which had been held by Labour for decades.

And when she did fall just short of an overall majority, she had to rely on support from the DUP, which prompted her to give a £1.5billion bung to Northern Ireland in return.

All of this just days after she had told voters that there was no magic money tree to prevent the continued public sector spending cuts and public sector pay cap. I have never come across such hypocrisy in my life – and definitely never any hypocrisy which was so much at the expense of taxpayers. Our cash-starved hospitals and schools could have done with that extra £1.5 billion which suddenly became available to Northern Ireland when Theresa May realised that it would ensure her survival as Prime Minister.

There is only one decent thing that Theresa May can do for this country right now, and that is to resign as Prime Minister and make way for a new leader who can start with a clean slate and find the right balance while maintaining a strong economy and giving our public services the proper investment which they so badly need.
