No excuses on cemetery
From the Express & Star, Friday September 29th, your headline ‘Anger over the grave state of churchyard’ at Rycroft Cemetery.
A few years ago I was a member of Bloxwich Cemetery Group which has since disbanded, during one of the meetings I learned that although we have graves they do not belong to us, they belong to the council. Now, Councillor Ian Shires the leisure and communities chief is telling us that the memorials are private property, and, the owners’ responsibility.
Fair enough, so we expect Walsall Council to keep Rycroft cemetery in a reasonable state, which is not what is happening. What can we expect with a budget of as little as £8,000 a year to maintain a cemetery as big as Ryecroft, only, a privatised grass cutting service.
This is not the first time I have written to the paper about the state of the cemetery, so come on Walsall Council and do something about it, instead of wheeling out councillors to make plausible excuses on your behalf.
