Express & Star comment: Crucial to pick the right leader

Don’t bet your mortgage on the Conservative Party leadership race being dominated by debate on policy.

Who will takeover at Number 10 from Theresa May?

Most of the candidates stood up yesterday to explain why they should be the next Prime Minister.

They were backed by fag-packet slogans – ‘Unite to Win’, ‘For a Fairer Britain’, ‘Ready to Lead’ etc.

The sniping has started of course.

Sajid Javid has been quick to criticise the behaviour of middle class drug takers, although he didn’t mention Michael Gove by name.

Rory Stewart attacked the ‘poison’ of Boris Johnson.

Johnson himself has clearly been advised that his best chance is to simply keep his trap shut.

That this opening of the contest was undignified was not a surprise. British politics is at an unprecedented stage.

The British people have never been so disengaged or disenchanted with the people who run our country.

The danger is that we will go into an inevitable general election with two main party leaders that are not trusted by the electorate.

It is crucial the Tories be seen to pick a leader in the right spirit and for the right reasons. Don’t hold your breath.
