Express & Star comment: Time to promote Midland MPs

The Black Country and Staffordshire have been blessed with some excellent politicians over the years.

Time for Margot James to be promoted?

And although at the present time there is arguably a shortage of talented operators on the national stage, this region continues to boast some truly excellent MPs from both major parties.

Yet far too few of our legislators ever manage to attain the land's higher political posts.

Labour's deputy leader Tom Watson appears to be on sure footing after making up with Jeremy Corbyn, although the party's lurch towards the far left has done little for the ambitions of first-rate politicians such as Emma Reynolds and Ian Austin.

For the Tories, Gavin Williamson's career is clearly on an upward trajectory, with his appointment as Defence Secretary the latest step in a rapid rise.

But the fact remains that not enough West Midlands based politicians ever get into positions of real authority.

With Theresa May said to be planning her latest Cabinet reshuffle, there is a chance to redress the balance.

And Margot James could be just what the Prime Minister is looking for as she prepares for a testing year of Brexit negotiations.

The Stourbridge MP has been quietly building up a stellar reputation on the national stage since she was elected in 2010.

As the Minister for Small Business, her performances in committee have been hugely impressive, while on the home front she is considered by many to be an excellent constituency MP.

Mrs May is unlikely to want to make wholesale changes to her top team.

Upsetting the apple cart too much would be a foolish move at a time when the Government – and indeed the country – is craving stability.

But there are certain to be a few minor tweaks, particularly when you consider the less than impressive performances of some members of her Cabinet in recent times.

Transport Secretary Chris Grayling, who incredibly was out of the country on the day the biggest increase to rail fares in five years came into effect, is one of those who will be looking over his shoulder.

Britain needs a stable Government if it is to succeed in securing a desirable Brexit deal.

This can only happen if Mrs May promotes her most capable people.
