The president of Ireland’s dog has captured the hearts of social media users after misbehaving during a TV interview.

In a video uploaded to Michael D Higgins’ social media channels, Bernese mountain dog Misneach was seen pawing at his owner and playfully chewing his hands.

Sharing the footage on Instagram, the president’s team captioned it “Behind the scenes at Aras an Uachtarain”.

The dog interrupted a TV interview in which Mr Higgins was paying tribute to actor Tom Hickey, who died on Saturday.

In a statement, the president and his wife, Sabina, said: “It is with great sadness that Sabina and I learned of the death of Tom Hickey, one of the greatest actors of his generation, giving over six decades to his profession.

“He leaves an indelible imprint on Irish theatre.”
