Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn showed off his football skills as he talked about the party’s commitment to generate more funds for the grassroots game.

An Arsenal fan, Corbyn used the FA Cup final day to highlight Labour’s manifesto commitment to ensuring 5% of the Premier League’s domestic and international television rights income is diverted to the grassroots game.

He joined a group of children for a training session on Hackney Marshes, first doing some coaching before practising his close control and passing.

Speaking after the session, he defended Labour’s policy after the league insisted it already spends 7% of the money in that way.

“There’s an issue about whether it is effectively distributed or not,” he said.

“What we want is that money to come in definitely, we want to independently distribute it because we want to make sure there are grassroots clubs all over the country that get the support that they need.”

Corbyn is believed to be taking a break from campaigning to watch his team take on Chelsea in the cup final clash at Wembley Stadium.
