A teenager who embarked on a Twitter mission to win himself a year’s supply of free chicken nuggets has the most retweeted tweet of all time.

Carter Wilkerson, 16, surpassed Ellen DeGeneres’ famous 2014 Oscar selfie after his plea for fast food was shared over 3.43 million times.

Carter reached out to fast food chain Wendy’s on Twitter in April, asking how many retweets he would need for a 365-day supply of nuggets, and they challenged him with the figure of 18 million.

Airlines, companies, celebrities and complete strangers made it their mission to make the Nevada teen’s dream a reality, spurring the hashtag #NuggsForCarter. Carter soon became verified on Twitter, with his number of followers propelling from a modest 138 to 104,000.

Although he’s fallen several million retweets short of his target, Wendy’s is gifting Carter with a year’s supply of chicken nuggets.

As a gesture of goodwill, the fast food chain is also donating $100,000 in Carter’s name to the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption, which helps finds homes for children in foster care.
