A man has been charged with attempted murder after a delivery driver was hit by his own stolen van.

Christopher Elgifari, 31, has been detained by South Wales Police, while the 54-year-old driver remains in a critical condition in hospital.

Police believe the alleged victim had been delivering parcels on Tuesday when his white van was stolen from Laytonia Avenue in Cathays, Cardiff.

Officers were called to nearby North Road at around 12.49pm, and the delivery driver was taken to the capital’s University Hospital of Wales.

His family are being supported by specialist officers.

Elgifari, from Llanrumney in the east of the city, will appear at Cardiff Magistrates’ Court on Friday.

A 39-year-old man was previously arrested in connection with the incident, and a white van has been seized.

Detectives from South Wales Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed or has footage of a white Renault Trafic van being driven in the area of Laytonia Avenue and North Road between 12.45pm and 12.50pm.

Anyone with information is asked to contact South Wales Police online or through 101, quoting occurrence number 2300099389.
