A woman who filmed a young child on her mobile phone while driving has been banned from the road, police have said.

Kerry White, 35, from Scarborough, North Yorkshire, was reported to police after she posted the video on her Facebook page.

Her driving was described by North Yorkshire Police as “highly irresponsible and incredibly dangerous” and showed a “blatant disregard” for the child’s safety.

White was banned from driving for a year and handed a six-month prison sentence suspended for 12 months after she pleaded guilty at York Crown Court to driving a vehicle dangerously.

A police spokesman said White filmed the child while driving on Woodland Ravine and Manor Road, in Scarborough, on December 16 2017.

The video shows a young child, sitting in the front passenger seat of the vehicle without a car seat, dancing to music.

White can be heard singing along and telling the child: “Come on, show us your moves.”

A member of the public reported the footage to police after White posted it to her Facebook page.

Officers identified the vehicle and location involved and recovered the original video from White’s mobile phone but she refused to answer questions about the incident during an interview.

She later admitted the charge and was handed the suspended sentence and the driving ban, as well as being ordered to complete 20 days’ unpaid work and pay a £115 victim surcharge.

Road Policing Officer Mark Patterson, from North Yorkshire Police, said: “As the footage clearly shows, Miss White’s driving that day was highly irresponsible and incredibly dangerous and it’s only through sheer luck she wasn’t involved in a serious collision.

“Her blatant disregard for the safety of the child and traffic laws could have ended tragically and the consequences of her actions had she of lost control of her vehicle doesn’t bear thinking about.

“I’d like to thank the member of the public who reported this incident to us and I hope this message sends a clear message that this type of reckless behaviour will not be tolerated on our roads.”
