Heavy downpours in parts of Wales led to flooding on Friday, leaving roads and fields under water and drivers trapped in their cars.

Fire crews were called to several incidents across south and mid Wales, including rescuing people from cars, while burst mains in north Wales left some without water supplies.

Two flood warnings and 23 flood alerts were put in place by Natural Resources Wales across the country on Friday afternoon following heavy rain.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service rescued two people from a car stuck in flood water in Peterston-super-Ely, Vale of Glamorgan.

In Rhondda Cynon Taff there was flooding of country roads and fields, leading to weekend sporting fixtures being cancelled.

Strong winds led to speed restrictions on the M4 and M48 bridges in Monmouthshire and the A55 Britannia Bridge on Anglesey.

Welsh Water said a burst pipe was affecting water supplies in Flintshire and Denbighshire, and said it had made bottles of water available in Mold.

A message on the government body’s website said: “Our team have been working in very difficult and challenging weather conditions and due to the high volumes of water it has taken us significant time to drain down the water in the area.

“We are continuing to tanker water into the area to maintain supplies. However if customers require bottled water, water is available to customers at the Tesco car park in Mold.

“This has been a challenging repair for our teams and we would like to thank you for your continued patience.”

Wales has been battered by strong winds and rain since Wednesday as Storm Etienne passed over the UK.

The storm was named by the IPMA Portuguese weather service after it was detected in the Azores.
