Firefighters are tackling a significant blaze in a high-rise building in Bournemouth.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service (DWFRS) said they had seven fire engines and two aerial appliances dispatched to the fire at an eight-storey property on Commercial Road in Bournemouth, at around 7.20pm.

A spokeswoman said more than 40 firefighters are dealing with a “significant fire”, and that they are working to extinguish it.

It is understood the blaze followed a burst of heavy rain and lightning in the area. DWFRS tweeted to say they believe the fire is contained to a flat.

The spokeswoman said the cause of the fire is currently unknown, adding: “We will be conducting an investigation once we have ceased firefighting operations.”
