A man has been charged with robbery after a 12-year-old girl’s mobile phone was stolen when she was attacked in the street.

Patrik Gunar was arrested after Derbyshire Police released images of the moment the girl resisted a robber on Cambridge Street, Derby, before he ran off with her iPhone 6.

The force has thanked a number of celebrities, including Piers Morgan, Nick Knowles, Michael Vaughan and Gaby Roslin, for retweeting the appeal.

The schoolgirl fought against her attacker for 25 seconds, captured on “horrific” CCTV footage at 4.40pm on February 18.

The 12-year-old was on her way home to her mother after she had been sent on an errand to the local shops.

The dramatic footage shows her put up a fight as she manages to keep hold of her phone even after she is dragged to the floor.

Gunar, 22, of Derby, will appear at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.

Detective Sergeant Jim Bolus, who is in charge of the investigation, said: “I would just like to thank the public for their fantastic response to our appeal for information.

“We are pleased that we have been able to make an arrest and the man will now be placed before the court to answer the charge placed before him.”
