A man has been arrested on suspicion of trespass after attempting to climb a wall into Buckingham Palace.

The 24-year-old was arrested at around 9.45pm on Sunday, minutes after stepping over the low outer perimeter fence next to the palace.

The suspect was not found to be carrying any offensive weapons and the incident is not being treated as terrorist related, the Metropolitan Police said.

He underwent a mental health assessment and was bailed to appear at a central London police station in early January in relation to his arrest for trespass.

The man was also arrested on suspicion of being in possession of a controlled substance, but no further action was taken on that charge.
