'Chemical lorry incident' closes M6 southbound

The M6 southbound is currently closed in Staffordshire due to an ongoing incident reportedly involving a chemical lorry,

The closure is between junctions 14 and 15, from Stoke-on-Trent to Stafford, with people advised to avoid the area if possible.

Staffordshire fire service in attendance and currently there is no confirmation on how long the closure will last.

It is believed the incident involved a chemical lorry carrying a hazardous substance.

Delays are currently being measured at over 90 minutes southbound and 60 minutes northbound.

Initially both carriageways were closed, with the northbound reopening at around 1pm.

A spokesman for the Central Motorway Police Group (CMPG), said: "The latest update from the M6 is that the northbound carriageway at J14 will be opening shortly.

"The southbound will remain closed for the time being."

At 2.17pm, CMPG tweeted: "Update on the M6 southbound J's 15-14, lanes 3 and 4 past the scene will shortly be opened to relieve trapped traffic. However the M6 will be closed southbound at J15 for the time being. The scene is now being managed by @HighwaysWMIDS"

At 4pm National Highways West Midlands was saying: "Officers at the scene of the collision on the #M6 south J15-J14 have cleared another lane and traffic caught within the closure is now being released past scene in 2 lanes. The M6 remains closed southbound J15-J14 however and there's severe delays of over 90 mins approaching J15."

At about 4.30pm, they updated their feed to say: "All traffic within the closure has now been released from the scene. The closure remains in place for ongoing clear-up work. Thanks for your patience."
