The charges were suspended by the authority from March 31 amid the coronavirus pandemic, with the suspension running until June 30.

But council bosses have now confirmed that the parking charges are due to be reinstated from Wednesday, July 1.

The suspension of parking charges applies to town centre cars parks run by Sandwell Council and does not include Sandwell Valley car parks.

More Covid-19 coverage:

Councillor Jackie Taylor, Sandwell Council's cabinet member for sustainable transport, said: "In line with the cabinet decision, parking charges at town centre car parks remain suspended until June 30 and are due to be reinstated on July 1."

Councillor Taylor has also urged residents to consider cycling – if they had access to a bike – or walking for short journeys.

All other parking conditions including charges for on-street parking bays still apply. The situation will be monitored and vehicles parked in contravention of the normal requirements for the safe and efficient use of car parks will still receive penalty charge notices.
