Wolverhampton ring road blocked after crash between West Midlands Metro tram and car

A woman was taken to hospital after a crash between tram and a car on Wolverhampton ring road.

Motorists and West Midlands Metro passengers faced disruption after the crash happened at around 8.50am

Traffic was blocked on the Bilston Road island after the crash for around 30 minutes.

Emergency services were at the scene including firefighters, police and ambulance staff.

Police were helping direct traffic while fire crews made checks on the car and tram.

A West Midlands Fire Service spokesman said: "No one was trapped and the driver got out of the vehicle. We left the scene at about 9.24am."

West Midlands Metro tweeted to say: "Due to a road traffic accident on the Bilston Road, trams are presently operating from Grand Central to Priestfield only."

A spokesperson for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "One ambulance and a paramedic officer attended the scene. A woman in her 50s has been taken to New Cross Hospital with pain to her left side."

A West Midlands Metro spokesman said: “Services between Wolverhampton St George’s and Priestfield were disrupted for around 45 minutes this morning following a collision between a car and a tram on Wishbone Island, Bilston Road.

"During the incident we were able to continue services between Priestfield and Grand Central. We are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident and cannot comment further until these have been completed.

"Damage to the tram appears superficial but, of course, it will be thoroughly examined before repairs are undertaken. It is too soon to estimate the cost of these repairs.”
