Decision delayed on two-way traffic in West Bromwich town centre

A decision on whether to make a road in West Bromwich town centre two ways to traffic, following a campaign backed by more than 1,000 people, has been put off until next year.

Sandwell Council has been asked to make Lombard Street open to traffic on both directions to ease traffic on surrounding roads.

Bosses have said any such move would have 'major implications' for recent developments, including the nearby New Square shopping centre.

While the council has not ruled out a change, it said it cannot be considered until January next year when its Local Plan for the borough will be reviewed.

A total of 1,085 signed a petition calling for the change on Lombard Street, which was made partly one-way in 2001.

West Bromwich councillor Bawa Dhallu said he supported the calls due to regular traffic gridlock around the town centre.
