People took to social media to vent their frustration after claims queues had left people waiting for up to a hour.

It came as the drop and go car park at the airport is temporarily closed for works.

In a message on the airport website, officials said: "The Drop and Go Car Park is currently temporarily closed while we improve our passenger drop off facilities.

"Please use car parks 1, 2, 3 and 5 for drop off and pick up."

It was unclear what led to the delays this morning.

The airport reported no delays on flights departing from 9am although there has been delays on scores of services from 7am.

These included flights to Amsterdam, Stuttgart, Tenerife and Malaga.

The delays came after problems last year with travellers waiting for their luggage.

Birmingham Airport said there is "no particular reason" for today's delays.

A spokeswoman said: "There was nothing in particular that caused the long queues.

"The airport's peak time for departures is between 5am and 9am and today has just been a particularly busy morning."

She added that queues were now easing.

Marshals have been stood directing traffic and passengers as they arrive at the airport to the other car parks while the drop and go parking area has been unavailable.

The spokeswoman said extra signs were in place to direct vehicles as they arrive outside.
