Mike Wood, who represents Dudley South, has been appointed to the role of Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Home Secretary.

It means the MP will help deal with issues within the Government department, including helping to deliver 20,000 police officers.

The role, which will see the MP help and assist ministers, is unpaid but allows MPs to gain experience of working in Government.

A statement from Mr Wood said: "I’m honoured to have been asked to be Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Home Secretary, working with Priti Patel MP at the Home Office as she delivers on 20,000 extra police officers, and strengthens law and order, security and our border."

It follows James Morris, MP for Halesowen and Rowley Regis, who became a Government whip.
