A Labour frontbencher has backtracked after appearing to signal her support for a second Brexit referendum.

West Midlands MP Preet Gill said she agreed that 'a people’s vote on the deal is an absolute must' in a conversation with a student campaigner on Twitter.

It appeared to put the shadow international development minister at odds with Labour's official position on Brexit under Jeremy Corbyn.

However, former Sandwell councillor Ms Gill later deleted her tweet, putting forward the explanation: "Just to clarify my position – a meaningful vote on the deal by Parliament is a must which will be informed by the people we represent."

In her original tweet, the Edgbaston MP wrote: "Great to see the student voice coming out and speaking up!! @Guild_President I hear you and agree that a people’s vote on the deal is an absolute must."

Earlier this year Owen Smith was sacked from Mr Corbyn's frontbench for endorsing a second Brexit referendum.

He had angered the Labour leader by saying the party must offer another vote to 'properly serve our democracy'.
