The council confirmed that Lisa Cartwright, who has been in the role since October 2011, has been suspended.

It said the suspension was a 'neutral act' that would allow for 'further investigations'.

Ian Parry, the council's deputy leader, said: "Following an investigation, the county council's head of HR, Lisa Cartwright, has been suspended.

"This is a neutral act that protects the employee and any other interested parties so that further investigations can take place.

"It would not be appropriate to make any further comment at this time."
