Top 10 Cars of the New York Motor Show

There’s less than a week to go until the New York International Auto Show and manufacturers are beginning to tease their latest cars and concepts.

While there aren’t as many exciting new releases as there were at last month’s Geneva Motor Show in Switzerland, the show still attracts a number of intriguing US-specific models as well as a number of new vehicles making their North American debuts.

Here’s what to expect when the cars are unveiled in the middle of next week.

1. Dodge Challenger SRT Demon

In America you can buy a Dodge Challenger or Charger ‘Hellcat’ with nearly 700bhp. However, as if that ludicrous performance wasn’t enough, the company has been teasing an even-higher-performance version dubbed ‘Demon’.

It’s set to have more power, wider tyres, a drag racing mode and a special engine tune to take advantage of high-octane race fuel.

2. Jaguar F-Type, four-cylinder engine

The Jaguar F-Type sports car is available with a V6 or V8, but it could be getting a new 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine to add to the range.

Rumoured to be unveiled at the New York motor show, the new entry-level model has been spied testing on the Nurburgring in Germany.

It could get the engine from the XE saloon or a new Ingenium engine, with a power output of around 300bhp expected either way.

3. Range Rover Velar

First revealed in London last month, the newest Range Rover model will be making its North American debut in New York.

Designed to slot between the Evoque and Range Rover Sport, the Velar is based on the hugely successful Jaguar F-Pace. Deliveries are expected to begin this summer.

4. Audi TT RS

Another car making its debut across the pond is the Audi TT RS. The all-wheel drive sports car is a ballistic rival to the Porsche Cayman, and has one of the last five-cylinder engines on sale.

5. Nissan GT-R Track Edition

This year, Nissan’s iconic GT-R supercar received a makeover, and at the top of the range will be this limited-run Track Edition.

Announced last month, it uses the same 582bhp, 3.8-litre twin-turbo V6 engine found in the standard GT-R, but gets aerodynamic upgrades, weight reduction and suspension tuning to make it faster on track.

6. Honda Clarity Electric and Plug-in Hybrid

Honda is expanding its Clarity range, adding plug-in hybrid and all-electric models alongside the existing hydrogen-powered model.

There’s little information so far, but all will be five-seater cars. The electric version is expected to go on sale first, while the plug-in hybrid will be the best-seller.

7. Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk

The Grand Cherokee might not seem like the most likely candidate for a high-performance model, but Jeep is making one anyway.

It’s powered by the Dodge Hellcat engine, so the Trackhawk will have a 697bhp V8 engine under the bonnet.

8. Alfa Romeo Stelvio

Alfa Romeo’s revival as a manufacturer of exciting cars continues with the Stelvio.

It’s been well-received by the media and Alfa will be hoping that American punters are similarly impressed when the crossover goes on display in New York.

9. Honda Civic Si

US-only Si models have been revealed ahead of their public debut at the New York motor show.

Designed to sit between the hot Type R variant and the rest of the Civic range, the Si gets a 202bhp 1.5-litre engine. We won’t get it in the UK as it’s so similar to our Sport trim.

10. Volvo XC60

Unveiled to the world at last month’s Geneva Motor Show, the Volvo XC60 is hopping across the Atlantic Ocean for display on the east coast of America.

The mid-sized SUV wears the design language now familiar from the XC90 – its larger sibling – and will be available with two four-cylinder engines and a plug-in hybrid option.
