Aston Martin begins production of DB4 GT Zagato continuation cars

Reproduction of a ’60s classic has started in Newport Pagnell, with just 19 examples slated to be made

Aston Martin has begun production of its DB4 GT Zagato continuation series, with just 19 examples being built.

Debuting in 1960, the DB4 GT Zagato was designed to take on the likes of Ferrari and Jaguar in GT Racing – although it struggled to find success on the track. However, its elegant design and the rise of the Aston Martin brand once James Bond drove a DB5 in 1965’s Goldfinger meant it has gained a desirable status among collectors of classics.

Now the racer is the latest addition to Aston’s ongoing series of recreated classics, following on from 25 examples of its predecessor, the DB4 GT, and just before a handful of Goldfinger-spec DB5s enter production in 2020.

True to the car’s roots, each of the continuation machines will be handcrafted by Aston Martin Works in Newport Pagnell, Buckinghamshire, from flat sheets of 1.2mm-thick aluminium. Powering each car will be straight-six engines created from the original blueprints, putting around 380bhp to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual gearbox.

All 19 examples of the DB4 GT Zagato will be sold as part of Aston Martin’s DBZ Centenary Collection, which also includes the recently announced DBS GT Zagato – a new car that looks set to be based on a DB11 but will take on a unique design.

Fancy the pair? They’ll set you back a cool £6m – and that’s before taxes. First deliveries of the DB4 GT Zagato will take place later this year, with the DBS GT Zagato to follow in late 2020.
