Hyundai to bring unique ‘walking car’ to CES 2019

The new ‘Ultimate Mobility Vehicle’ combines wheels and legs for unparalleled mobility in tough conditions

Hyundai will hit the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas later this month with something we’ve never seen before – a car that combines wheels and… legs?

The Elevate concept has been previewed with a teaser image, showing what appears to be driven wheels on the end of extendable legs to create what the brand calls a ‘totally new’ vehicle concept.

The prospect of remarkable ground clearance and the ability to literally ‘crawl’ over obstacles could make the Elevate a seriously capable off-road vehicle – to the point where Hyundai’s created its own moniker of UMV – or Ultimate Mobility Vehicle.

Little in the way of detail has been revealed about the concept, which will debut on January 7 at CES in Las Vegas. However, it’s expected to use a fully electric powertrain and advanced artificial intelligence and robotic systems.

The teaser image shows a first-aid logo painted on what looks to be a large side entry door, suggesting that Hyundai sees the Elevate as a useful tool for first responders in difficult terrain.

Expect more details just before the opening of CES’s doors on January 8.
