A video released by Japanese manufacturer Mazda suggests a new-generation hatchback is on its way

Mazda looks set to introduce a new generation of its 3 hatchback in the near future.

A teaser video published online by the European arm of the Japanese manufacturer gives away very little about the car, although the silhouette strongly indicates that it is the expected fourth-generation 3.

No further information has been revealed, but the video title says the car will usher in ‘a new era’.

What that means exactly is unclear, but the firm is likely to introduce a whole new engine technology with the car. ‘Skyactiv-X’ has been developed by the firm for some time, with the firm aiming to deliver the efficiency of diesel power to petrol engines to reduce pollutants.

Mazda claims that Skyactiv-X will produce around 10 to 30 per cent more torque than its current Skyactiv-G petrol range, while also improving fuel economy by approximately one-fifth.

Electric vehicles may be the trend in the industry at the moment, but don’t expect Mazda to focus on going fully battery-powered with the new 3 from launch. The firm believes petrol power will remain a part of its core model line-up for the foreseeable future, predicting that 95 per cent of its vehicles sold in 2030 will use an internal combustion engine paired with some form of electrification.

Although no exact date has been given for the reveal of the new car, the teaser video closes with the caption ‘November 2018’ – indicating that its unveiling will take place next month.
