Second-generation Mercedes GLE revealed

Mercedes has revealed its second-generation GLE – and with it comes a host of new clever technologies.

The mid-size SUV, which takes on the likes of the Audi Q7 and BMW X5, also features a new look alongside a refreshed range of engines.

Adopting the latest corporate design of the German firm, the Mercedes GLE is 80mm longer than its predecessor. The result is a car that not only looks larger and has a greater road presence than before, but also one that’s ‘even more spacious and comfortable’.

It’s the first time a GLE has been offered as a seven-seater, while boot space is up to 825 litres with five seats in place – a 125-litre increase. Comfort has been improved for second-row passengers, too, with the seats now electrically adjustable.

Typical Mercedes cabin design features here, with the firm’s new MBUX infotainment system making an appearance on a 12.3-inch touchscreen display – following its debut on the new A-Class hatchback. It’s completed by an equal-size LED screen in place of the traditional instrument cluster in front of the driver.

A technological highlight of the second-generation SUV is ‘E-Active Body Control’ – a trick suspension system that individually controls spring and damping forces on each wheel to counteract body roll, pitch and squat for a more comfortable driving experience.

More new safety technologies include Active Tailback Assist, which can aid the driver in stop-start traffic, and the addition of a ‘Turn-off’ function to the Active Brake Assist system – sensing potential oncoming danger when turning into junctions and automatically acting if necessary.

At launch, the Mercedes GLE will have a new, six-cylinder 48v mild-hybrid powertrain developing 384bhp. Diesel options and a ‘long-range’ hybrid will follow later, although details on these have yet to be confirmed.

All-wheel drive will be offered on all engines, with a fully variable system available if the optional ‘Offroad’ package is selected.

The new Mercedes GLE will make its public debut at the Paris Motor Show, taking place from October 4 to 14. It’s set to go on sale early next year in Europe, although UK pricing and specifications have yet to be confirmed.
