The concept SUV is designed to embody Vauxhall’s key values – British, ingenious, progressive and approachable

Vauxhall has unveiled a brand concept signalling its future design direction.

The GT X Experimental is a five-door, all-electric, coupe-style compact SUV, acting as the first physical representation of how Vauxhall’s future production vehicles will look while keeping in line with its core values, which the manufacturer says are British, ingenious, progressive and approachable.

It has been built on a lightweight architecture with a reduced footprint. The car is 4.06 metres long, 1.83 metres wide and 1.528 metres high including its antenna.

As Vauxhall has promised that there will be an electrified vehicle in each of its ranges by 2024, the GT X Experimental is fitted with a 50kWh compact lithium-ion battery with inductive charging. Although the concept car isn’t fully self-driving, it does have Level 3 autonomous functions.

The wheels on the GT X Experimental are especially advanced. Although they appear to have 20-inch alloys, they’re actually 17 inches, meaning they look good while not compromising ride comfort.

Vauxhall’s designers have worked on the GT X Experimental with what they call a “visual detox” in mind. This involved focusing on creating bold proportions and structured, flowing surfaces on the car’s body, the manufacturer said.

The most interesting feature on the interior is the instrument panel, which is encased in a module called the Pure Panel. Everything is displayed to the driver on one large screen, as opposed to a number of small ones, which makes it easy to access the car’s various functions.

Stephen Norman, group managing director of Vauxhall, said: “Vauxhall is defiantly not a prestige brand, and not a ‘me-too’ brand, but we make great cars and people buy them because of their value, approachability, ingenuity and progressiveness.

“The GT X Experimental picks up on these reasons for purchase, reinforces them, and creates a clear template for design elements in Vauxhall production cars of the future.”
