The best-selling cars around the globe for the first half of 2018 have been revealed, with Ford’s F-Series leading the way.

New data released by automotive data analysists JATO Dynamics shows the American manufacturer sold 534,827 units of the truck between the start of January and the end of June — a three per cent rise in sales year-on-year. Following in second was the Toyota Corolla — of which the Auris sold in the UK is derived from — with 478,122, while the Volkswagen Golf rounded out the top three with 431,836 sales.

Despite being the UK’s best-selling car, the Ford Fiesta ranked just 30th overall, selling 215,157 around the globe.

Other highlights include the Nissan Qashqai, seeing a 26 per cent rise in sales compared with the same period last year to 313,149, and the Tiguan Allspace — with 201,437 in its debut year.

There was also an incremental rise in the number of cars sold in total, with a 3.6 per cent rise to 44.03m from 42.49m year-on-year.

China was the largest market for new cars for the first half of the year, with 12.3m sold in the Asian country, while 9.77m were sold across the whole of Europe.

SUVs still continue to dominate the scene, with a 34 per cent market share — a colossal gap over the compact segment in second, which held 16.1 per cent of the market.
