Bentley Mulsanne W.O. Edition kicks off marque’s centenary celebrations

Limited to a production run of just 100, the W.O. pays tribute to the last model designed by founder W.O. Bentley

Bentley’s 100th birthday isn’t until next year but the British brand is beginning the celebrations early with a tribute to its founder.

The Mulsanne W.O. Edition is a limited-run car taking its name from the firm’s founder, Walter Owen – or W.O. – Bentley.

As is to be expected, the car is fitted out with the finest luxury trimmings. The leather is cut from heritage hide to replicate the patina of vintage cars, while the interior features four different types of wood finished with art deco-style marquetry.

The exterior is finished as standard in onyx black paint, although Bentley’s bespoke nature means any other colour can be specified if the customer wishes it. Black wheels complete the moody aesthetic.

However, the really interesting touch sits within the passenger cocktail cabinet. Along with custom glass tumblers, there’s a display window on the door, within which sits a piece of the crankshaft from W.O. Bentley’s very own 8-litre. It’s also depicted above in a marquetry scene featuring the front grille and headlights.

Only 100 examples of the car will be made.

The 8-litre was the last car W.O. designed – a true grand tourer, and one of the most luxurious cars available. At launch in 1930, it was the most powerful car in Britain. Bentley said at the time: “I have always wanted to produce a dead silent 100mph car, and now I think we have done it.”

The tribute act’s 6.75-litre V8 engine trails behind the 8-litre straight-six of the original in terms of capacity, but with 505bhp on tap it certainly has the power advantage. The 0-60mph sprint takes just 5.1 seconds and its top speed is 184mph.

The Mulsanne W.O. Edition kick-starts Bentley’s centenary year. Expect the brand to mark 2019 in some considerable style. Bentley hasn’t announced pricing for the W.O. Edition, but the standard Mulsanne starts from around £230,000.
