Elon Musk has announced a new version of his motoring firm Tesla’s Model 3, which he claims will reach 60mph in just 3.5 seconds.

Tweeting the news, Musk said the new version of the Model 3 would be dual-motor and all-wheel drive – with the second motor added to drive the rear wheels.

The new version of the Model 3 would also have a top speed of 155mph and would have a range of up to 310 miles, the entrepreneur said.

As Musk himself hints in a series of tweets, Tesla is looking to take on the established BMW M3 with its new Model 3, as the company looks to move towards profitability after a range of issues around its production line.

The company reported a loss of more than £500 million in its most recent financial results but is predicting to reach growth by the end of the financial year.

Tesla production has struggled to meet demand at times in recent years, with Musk blaming “bottlenecks” on the production line partly on automation slowing the process down at times.

“Humans are underrated”, he said in a tweet on the subject in April.
