The Porsche 911 GT3 RS has set a blistering sub-seven-minute lap time at the world’s most treacherous race track, becoming the third road machine in the firm’s history to do so.

With racing driver Kévin Estre – who competes for Porsche in the World Endurance Championship – behind the wheel, the latest hardcore 911 managed to complete a lap of the 12.9-mile Nürburgring Nordschleife in 6:56.4.

Frank Steffen Walliser, vice president of Porsche motorsport and GT cars, said: “No other Porsche model gets as close to racing as the new GT3 RS. Many innovative ideas from top-level motorsport were transferred; for example, from the 911 GT3 R.

It takes a high calibre machine to set such a lap time, and that’s exactly what the Porsche 911 GT3 RS is.

Priced from £141,346, the GT3 RS is powered by a naturally-aspirated 4.0-litre, straight-six engine that develops 513bhp, allowing the 0-60mph sprint to be completed in three seconds flat. It’ll even go on to a top speed of 194mph despite its large rear wing – which creates bags of downforce, key to getting the car around the Nürburgring so fast.

Kévin Estre said: “This lap was a sensational experience for me. Through the fast corners and on the brakes in particular, the GT3 RS is unbelievably close to our racing car – the GT3 R.
