Ford’s large 4×4 has been given a makeover, with the main highlight a 2.0-litre bi-turbo engine

The new Ford Edge is making its European debut with a sporty new trim level, a raft of driver assistance systems and a meaty new powertrain.

One of the major highlights of the American firm’s updated SUV is the new 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel engine, offered for the first time on this continent. Making 235bhp, the unit uses one smaller and one larger turbocharger that work together at lower engine speeds to improve responsiveness, while the larger turbo works alone at higher engine speeds to boost power.

The engine is mated to a new eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive, and meets the latest Euro 6 emissions standards.

Two other power outputs are available for the 2.0-litre diesel in the form of a 187bhp version mated to the six-speed manual gearbox and all-wheel-drive system, and a 148bhp option that uses the eight-speed automatic and front-wheel drive.

The new Edge is also packed full of camera- and sensor-based driver assistance technologies designed to help motorists avoid crashes or at least mitigate them. The new SUV will feature post-collision braking, evasive steering assist and adaptive cruise control for the first time in Europe.

Also new is the ST-Line trim, which was introduced by Ford last year across its range to offer buyers cars that look sporty but don’t have the high-performance engines found on the full ST models. Here on the Edge, it gets new-look front and rear bumpers, a wide mesh grille, colour-coded body panels and 20-inch alloy wheels as standard.

Aesthetic changes across the new Edge range include a wider grille with a unique mesh design for each trim level, LED headlamps and rear lights as standard, and a redesigned bonnet.

Roelant de Waard, vice-president of marketing, sales and service at Ford of Europe, said: “Helping customers effortlessly deal with stop-start traffic using our most advanced driver assistance technologies to date, and letting them cruise in comfort supported by our refined and fuel-efficient new 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel engine and eight-speed automatic gearbox, the new Ford Edge is our most compelling offering yet for the ever-growing numbers of European customers migrating towards SUVs.”
