It is the newest, and smallest, model to ever wear the famous GTI badge.

The Volkswagen up! GTI is set to hit UK roads from February, and now the German carmaker has released specs for the car as the anticipation of its arrival grows.

Arriving 42 years after the original Golf GTI, the brand says it wanted to allow young drivers, and perhaps not-so-young drivers, to create, or recreate, great motoring memories.

Equipped with a 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine – offering up to 113bhp and 200Nm of torque – the “pocket rocket” can reach speeds of 122mph, with a 0-60mph time of 8.6 seconds.

The power output of the small car is, VW says, broadly in line with the Golf GTI Mk1, unveiled in 1976.

Offered in three- or five-door form, and with a six-speed manual gearbox, VW promises engaging dynamic performance blended with the practically of the Up!’s small size.

Both models will be offered in one generous specification in the UK including a colour infotainment system with 5.0-inch colour screen; Bluetooth telephone and audio; USB connectivity; six speakers and DAB radio. Special features for the GTI model include: heated seat; heated wing mirrors; and front fog lights with static cornering lights.

The Up! GTI is also one of the first the German carmaker is to launch with a close-coupled petrol particulate filter, which reduces emissions by up to 95 per cent.

Drivers can also expect to use the car as an everyday commuter, with combined fuel economy of 49.6mpg to 50.4mpg.

Prices start at £13,750 for the three-door model, and £14,150 for the five-door. VW says full UK prices for all models will be published nearer to its release date in February.

Preorders are due to start being taken on February 6, with the first vehicles to be delivered to customers in the same month.
