Mercedes-Benz has opened the order books for its new CLS saloon, which is priced from £57,510 in the UK.

First unveiled at the LA Auto Show late last month, the CLS is available with three engines in Britain.

The entry-level CLS 350d makes use of a new in-line six-cylinder diesel engine that produces 282bhp and 600Nm of torque. The CLS 400d, which costs from £60,410, uses the same power plant, although power has been increased to 335bhp while torque rises to 700Nm.

The CLS 350d will hit 60mph from a standstill in 5.5 seconds, while the CLS 400d manages the sprint in 4.8 seconds. Both cars are limited to a 155mph top speed.

The £57,619 CLS 450 is powered by a 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder biturbo petrol engine, which also features Mercedes’ new EQ boost technology. This is made up of a 48-volt inline starter generator.

The petrol power plant develops 362bhp and 500Nm of torque, while the EQ boost system provides an additional 250Nm and 22bhp. Combined, the CLS 450 can complete the sprint from 0-60mph in 4.6 seconds and hit a top speed of 155mph.

As far as fuel economy is concerned, the CLS 350d and 400d will manage respective consumption figures of 48.7mpg and 47.9mpg on the combined cycle. Both emit 156 grams of CO2 per kilometre.

The petrol-powered CLS 450 boasts a combined fuel consumption figure of 36.2mpg, while CO2 emissions stand at 184g/km.

AMG Line is the only trim level available on the CLS, although it features a strong level of equipment as standard.

All models benefit from 19-inch alloy wheels, a parking package that includes a reversing camera, leather upholstery, DAB radio and a 12.3-inch infotainment screen to name but a few features.

The Premium Plus equipment package is also available as a £3,895 optional extra. This adds keyless start and entry, a Burmester surround sound system, 360-degree surround view camera and Comand Online infotainment system.

The £2,495 Comfort package, meanwhile, adds Air Balance, Air Body Control air suspension and black nappa leather upholstery.

Customers can also specify their CLS with technology from the flagship S-Class luxury saloon in the shape of Mercedes’ £1,695 Driving Assistance Plus package. This includes route-based speed adaptation that allows the car to detect upcoming junctions and roundabouts and alter its speed accordingly.

First deliveries of the new CLS are expected in summer 2018.
