DVSA reveals details of new ‘show me, tell me’ section of driving test
Drivers will have to show examiners they know how to do basic tasks before and during tests
Details of the new ‘show me, tell me’ section in the updated UK driving test were revealed by the DVSA today.
The section of the revised test, which comes into force from December 4, will see drivers explain to examiners how to carry out a safety task before they begin driving. They will also demonstrate another task while behind the wheel.
Examples of the ‘tell me’ questions published by the DVSA include explaining how to check the car’s brakes are working before starting a journey, where to find information on recommended tyre pressures and how to tell if tyres are road-legal.
As for the ‘show me’ section, drivers will have to demonstrate one task from a selection.
These include washing the front windscreen, switching on dipped headlights and operating the horn.
Examinees will be asked one ‘show me’ and one ‘tell me’ question during their test.
The introduction of ‘show me, tell me’ is just one of a number of changes to the driving test that will come into effect from December.
Others include an increased independent driving section, the addition of following directions from a sat nav and revisions to reversing manoeuvres.

“Making sure the driving test better assesses a driver’s ability to drive safely and independently is part of our strategy to help people stay safe on Britain’s roads.
“It’s vital that the driving test keeps up to date with new vehicle technology and the areas where new drivers face the greatest risk once they’ve passed their test.”
