Chinese automaker Chery has pulled the covers off a pre-production version of its new Exeed TX at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show.

The compact SUV will be the first Chery vehicle to go on sale in Europe, with the manufacturer setting “young, urban, progressive-minded customers” in its sights.

A plug-in hybrid (PHEV) will be the first variant of the Exeed TX to be rolled out, and will be followed by a regular hybrid and a pure-electric version.

The Exeed TX PHEV draws its power from a 1.5-litre petrol engine and an electric motor. Together, they give the SUV a power output of 262bhp and will enable the Exeed TX to accelerate from 0-60mph in 5.8 seconds before hitting a top speed of 124mph.

It also features an all-electric range of 43 miles when travelling at 75mph. The battery can fast-charge to 80 per cent capacity in 30 minutes, and will reach a full charge from a 220V household supply in four hours. Combined fuel economy stands at 157mpg according to NEDC standards.

Chery also promises a generous level of standard equipment will make its way into the Exeed TX. This includes a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system that incorporates smartphone connectivity, wi-fi hotspot and voice recognition.

As far as safety equipment is concerned, the Exeed TX features lane departure warning, blind spot warning and an advanced driver fatigue detection system to name but a few.

Anning Chen, CEO of Chery, said: “In just a few years we intend to start selling a family of vehicles in European markets across multiple segments, with power supplied by a range of electrified powertrains.

“Our brand will target open-minded, relatively younger customers in particular, with a product roll-out strategy that focuses on quality, low- and zero-emissions powertrains, and emotional engagement with customers.

“All Chery vehicles that are intended to be sold in Europe will feature class-leading connectivity, be fun to drive, offer flexible and spacious interiors and will provide comprehensive personalisation, all of which are aligned with our high standards of product quality and aftersales support.”

The Chery Exeed TX is set to launch in Europe “within a few years”.
