Five million leisure trips by road expected this Bank Holiday Monday
Figure is one million greater than that recorded last year
Five million car journeys are expected to take place this Bank Holiday Monday, as motorists make the most of the last public holiday before Christmas.
This figure represents a one million increase over that recorded in 2016.
More than 18 million separate getaways are planned between August 24 and the bank holiday, according to the RAC.
However, drivers will welcome Highways England’s decision to lift around 450 miles of roadworks, leaving 98 per cent of the nation’s motorways and major A-roads free from roadworks.
RAC traffic spokesman Rod Dennis said: “While summer appears to have taken a leave of absence for many of us, our figures suggest drivers are undeterred and are still keen to make the most of the long weekend to spend time with friends and family in the UK.
“We recommend motorists wanting to beat the queues travel outside peak times – so avoid Friday afternoon and evening if you can and try to get away in good time if you are planning a day trip on Monday, or face a long journey home at the end of a summer holiday.”
The RAC predicts that Monday will experience the most traffic, with five million car journeys predicted to take place. The next busiest day is predicted to be Saturday, with 4.4 million trips due to be undertaken.
