Mercedes-Benz has revealed the highly anticipated X-Class – a premium take on the pick-up truck class.

The model is designed to bring the German carmaker’s SUV styling and reputation for luxury to a market that’s traditionally been more focused on rugged practicality.

The X-Class offers three trim variants, with Pure featuring a more basic interior for commercial use, the top-spec Power trim coming with more luxury features for those who live in the city, while Progressive is a compromise between the two.

Mercedes claims its pick-up truck will offer on-road driving that’s on a par with passenger cars, thanks to a wide track and a specially tuned suspension and damper system. For those looking to take it off-road, it has all-wheel drive, low gearing and a lockable differential.

To emphasise the premium nature of the X-Class, Mercedes is offering a wide range of upholstery and colour options. There are six seat covers to choose from including two leather options, a soft fabric finish for comfort-spec models and a luxury leather and microfibre alternative.

There are also plenty of accessories available to improve practicality such as a styling bar, side bar and canopy, while various load bed covers will also be offered.

Dieter Zetsche, head of Mercedes-Benz Cars, said: “The segment for mid-size pick-ups is ripe for a premium vehicle.

“With the X-Class we will open up this segment to new customer groups, just as we redefined the off-road segment with the M-Class more than 20 years ago. Our pick-up convinces as a workhorse, yet also as a family and lifestyle vehicle.”

The Mercedes-Benz X-Class will cost from £34,500 when it goes on sale at the end of the year.
