First time that an individual has been honoured rather than a single marque

The life and career of Bernie Ecclestone is due to be celebrated at the upcoming Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Marking the first time that an individual has been celebrated rather than a company or manufacturer, this year’s Goodwood event will chart Bernie’s 40 years in Formula One.

Lord March, the founder of the Goodwood Festival of Speed, said: “This is not so much a tribute, but rather a Goodwood celebration of a racer who has had such a huge influence on the sport that we all love.

“And now that Bernie has stepped aside from running Formula One, he has agreed to spend the weekend at the festival with many of the great names with whom he has worked during a life dedicated to racing. It’s his first visit to the festival and he will bring with him some great historic Grand Prix cars from his incredible collection.”

The sculpture located outside Goodwood House will this year display cars from five different chapters of Ecclestone’s life as a racer, manager and team owner, among others.

The event will also explore Ecclestone’s time as both an impresario and, finally, as a ‘legend’. He achieved this status through a wide variety of successes in Formula 1, including periods as a racing driver and manager. Various people from his career, including World Champions and former team members, will be attending the day that will include an undisclosed ‘key moment’ outside Goodwood House at 3pm.

The Goodwood Festival of Speed takes place from June 29 to July 2.
