The former Walsall Police Station has been put up for sale for £1 million.

West Midlands Police announced they were closing the Green Lane site along with 26 others after a year-long review in an attempt to save the force money.

The station shut its doors for the final time on Sunday and the region's force has wasted no time putting it up for sale.

The 1.6 acre site has already been listed on property website Zoopla for a guide price of £1m. The site boasts offices, gym, storage, kitchen, toilets and internal car parking.

It was originally due to close on May 31 but the date was pushed backed as refurbishment work on the force's new Bloxwich was ongoing, but officers have now moved in. Kevin Pitt, Walsall's police and community partnerships officer, said: "Certainly things are different today.

"When I joined, we had a bar and a pool room for officers to unwind in after a shift.

"It seems slightly odd now but a lot of officers lived nearby and it was a way of making sure they didn't get noticed in the community by people who may have something against them.

"It used to be a hectic and busy place, full of people racing around at all hours.

"But over the years it has got less busy, a lot of policing is done over the phone or through computers these days.

"I think everyone knows it is the right time to move on but there are a lot of mixed emotions amongst staff."

The closure of the site forms part of plans from West Midlands Police to save more than £3 million a year.
