The Penny Black, in the Bull Ring, is expected to close by the end of September, Wetherspoons has announced.

A spokesman said it was a commercial decision taken by the company and staff will be offered alternative jobs within Wetherspoons pubs.

They added that no definite closure date had been set.

Eddie Gershon, Wetherspoon spokesman, said: "We can confirm that The Penny Black will be closing.

"There is no definite date, but it is likely to be towards the end of September 2019.

“We understand that the pub’s loyal customers and staff will be disappointed and we thank them for their custom and loyal service over the years.

“This is a commercial decision taken by the company. All of the staff will be offered alternative jobs within Wetherspoon pubs.”

The Penny Black pub is named after the first postage stamp, created by Kidderminster's Rowland Hill in 1840.
