More than 250 regulars signed a petition to keep the landlady and ambience of the Spread Eagle after they discovered Marston's plans to refurbish the pub.

He said: "The Spread Eagle in Wednesfield is more than just a pub; it’s a cherished home away from home for many in our community, especially for the more mature patrons who have found a welcoming and familiar space within its walls.

"With Nicola Walker at the helm as our beloved landlady, this establishment has thrived as a pillar of friendship and camaraderie, offering a warm, inviting atmosphere that sports bars simply cannot replicate. Yet, a concerning proposal to transform the Spread Eagle into a sports bar and restaurant threatens to erase the unique character and community spirit that has been cultivated over the years.
