Service to be held for 'legendary' Wolverhampton shopkeeper

A service will be held in memory of a popular shopkeeper outside the hardware store he had run for more than 30 years.

Shopkeeper Raj Kumar died suddenly aged 52

Raj Kumar, of Ashmore Park Hardware in Wolverhampton, died suddenly on Saturday aged 52.

There has been an outpouring of grief from the community with dozens of floral tributes and candles left outside the shop in Griffiths Drive.

The ten-minute service, which has been organised Rev Sam Leach of St Alban’s Church, will begin at midday on Saturday. There will be a minute's silence.

Wednesfield councillor Phil Bateman has added his own tribute to Mr Kumar.

He said: "I know Raj Kumar was a special man to his family. We also will miss him, the Ashmore Park Shopping Parade will never be quite the same again with the passing of Raj Kumar our own and now legendary hardware shop owner.

"Raj will be long remembered here on Ashmore Park."

Mr Kumar collapsed in his shop on Saturday. He leaves behind a wife and daughter.
