No date set yet for the reopening of Tettenhall Pool

No date has been set for the reopening of Tettenhall Pool as fears have been sparked it could potentially remain shut over summer.

Tettenhall Pool reopened in August last year.

Wolverhampton Council has been called on to open up the popular facility – allowing youngsters to make the most of the sun.

But chiefs in the city have confirmed there is "no date" for the reopening of the popular attraction due to a lack of Government guidance surrounding the issue.

Councillor Jonathan Yardley, who represents the Tettenhall Regis ward, said he "hoped" the pool would reopen for summer – but said it was dependant on the rules being relaxed.

He said: "I hope it will be open in time for summer because it's the premier leisure attraction in Wolverhampton. More people use that than anywhere else in the city – and it's free, so I really do hope it's open for the season.

"But then it needs to be safe and sound for everyone. Sometimes in the warm weather it can be standing room only – but it's outdoors at least.

"If the officers who run the pool believe it's safe to do so then I would urge them and the council to open the pool up as soon as possible.

"It's a tough decision because swimming pools are closed and the council should follow the Government guidelines, which is following the science, so Tettenhall Pool – when it opens – should be based on that."

It comes after the pool – situated in the heart of Tettenhall's Upper Green – was closed last year for repair works after a consultation on whether it should become an outdoor gym.

More than 95 per cent of the 3,796 responses to the public consultation rejected plans for the gym and decided to save Tettenhall Pool – which reopened on August 1 last year.

Councillor Steve Evans, cabinet member for city environment at Wolverhampton Council, said: "The Government advice regarding open air pools remains unchanged, therefore, we are unable to make any plans to re-open paddling pools at this time."

Swimming chiefs are hoping the Government will announce a timetable for the reopening of pools later this week.
