Cigarettes and cash were stolen after the raid at Sangha's Supermarket, in Bilston, in the early hours today.

Police arrived at the scene after a van was used to ram through the shop's shutters.

They pursued a getaway BMW car after the shop, in Church Street, was targeted at around 2.30am.

They chased the BMW until it came to a stop in Ettingshall Road, in the Parkfields area.

Three people jumped out and ran off but the driver rammed into the patrol car before also fleeing.

Later police were able to arrest a 38-year-old man.

Weapons were also found in the car after a search.

A spokesman from West Midlands Police said the two officers were assaulted suffering minor injuries.

A man remains in custody for questioning.

Anyone who saw the BMW – registration number RE02 KXZ – since it was stolen on February 27 are asked to get in touch.

"Enquiries are continuing around all those involved in the ram-raid which saw a transit van rammed into the shutters."

Anyone with information is asked to call West Midlands Police on 101, quoting reference 20WV/56724R/20.
