Peter Wilson and Peter Sutton celebrate winning the Peter Baker Memorial Cup after being presented with the cup by Peter Baker's widow Chris

The Peter Baker Memorial Cup was set up in honour of Peter, who died suddenly of a heart attack while playing a game of doubles for Wednesbury Tennis Club in August 2019.

The tournament, which took the form of a single set doubles competition, was meant to be held earlier in the year, but had to be postponed under September 18 due to coronavirus restrictions.

Peter Wilson had been on court the day his friend died, giving him CPR as he and the other players battled to save Peter, and spoke about what Peter meant to everyone.

He said: "Peter was an excellent person and was mad-keen on tennis, organising everything as secretary of the Walsall amateur tennis league.

"He organised all the matches, went to all the meetings and was part of everything to do with tennis in South Staffordshire."

The one-day tournament saw players come from across the region to take part, with 66-year-old Peter himself coming out as the winner with his partner Peter Sutton after five rounds of competition.

The trophy was presented by Peter Baker's wife Chris, with Peter saying it was such an honour to win the competition in the name of his late friends.

He said: "It was amazing to win it as I didn't turn up expecting to win it, but I got drawn with Peter as my partner and we clicked well and managed to win it.

"Hopefully, this tournament will continue every year and help to honour the memory of a well respected person involved in the amateur tennis circuit."
